Life is short, and the average American has a lifespan of less than 30,000 days. While you can, with hard work and luck, acquire more of almost anything, you cannot obtain more time. Time only flows in one direction. Therefore, how you choose to live your life is of utmost importance. This book aims to explore this topic.
I do not claim to have all the answers. I am still learning every day, and many of the beneficial ideas presented here have been gleaned from other people, either directly or through my own reading. However, these are the principles that have worked for me.
Like life, this book is intentionally concise. Many books I have read could have communicated their ideas in fewer pages. In the spirit of the wise person who noted, "If I'd had more time, I would have written a shorter letter," I have endeavored to be succinct. Brevity does not imply a lack of substance. The concepts contained within have improved the quality of my life, and I hope they will be equally useful to you.
Utilizing these principles, I have created a life that I truly love. My work no longer feels like a chore; I cherish the people with whom I spend time, and I am passionate about my life outside of my career. I have learned to strike a balance that brings me happiness, encompassing my work, family, friends, and personal pursuits, including exercise.
Sadly, I believe this level of fulfillment is rare. Yet, while I acknowledge my good fortune, I believe that most people can strive towards similar goals in their own lives.
My interest in maximizing my life's potential began during my college years, but it was the untimely death of a beloved boss in my mid-thirties that truly heightened my sense of urgency. This young man had a wonderful wife, three young children, and a thriving career – he had everything, except enough time.
As a result, I made the bold decision to leave an exciting job at Microsoft in 2001, amidst the bursting of the internet bubble, to establish the investment firm I now manage. This was a difficult choice, both financially and emotionally. Many people, including friends, family, and even the press, thought I was deluding myself. One press quote described me as "a little crazy" and "a little nuts."
In retrospect, the business has proven quite successful. A key aspect of my work involves reading and contemplating a wide range of topics, which has made the process of writing this book relatively straightforward. However, as with many things in life, the actual execution of these principles on a daily basis is tremendously challenging.
As Thomas Edison aptly stated, life is "1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." Even so, I hope you will find the journey of implementing these concepts to be an enriching and enjoyable experience.
